Kitchen Island (Types, shapes, purpose)

 

Kitchen Island serves many purposes and they also have a low cost. Also one of the greatest benefits is that they are ready made available or some of them are available in ready-made to assemble, you just have to pick items according to your requirements and then the store will assemble it in no time. There are two basic types of Kitchen Island: “Permanent Island” or also known as “fixed island” and “Portable Island” or also known as “Temporary Island” described below:

  • Fixed Islands

Fixed islands are permanent sorts of the kitchen. They cannot be moved once they are installed and some kinds of the fixed island have electrical or plumbing in them. Further three types of fixed islands are described below:

  • Cabinet Kitchen Islands

Generally, a cabinet kitchen island is a 2 or 4 fixed base cabinets joined with each other with brackets.  Usually, these cabinets are topped with quartz or granite slab to form an extension. It can be configured in square or rectangular based on the no. of base cabinets utilized.

A cabinet kitchen island can be made by using old unused cabinets if they are in good condition. This saves a lot of money and the problem to trash out or selling old cabinets is also resolved. These cabinets can also be used as a storage space and they are also long-lasting. But cabinet kitchen island requires built-in electrical outlets.

  • Full Kitchen Islands

The full kitchen island is the basic kind of permanent kitchen island. Full kitchen islands are generally custom made. So it will depend on you how much space you want and how much and which material is to be used. A full kitchen island can be used only for baking or you can use it for dining purposes. To use this for dining purpose, you have designed it as an open space area. A full kitchen island can only be used for the baking purpose and for that you have to place marble countertop.

  • Double Tiered Kitchen Islands

The double-tiered kitchen island is just as similar to a full kitchen island. The basic difference between double tiered kitchen and full kitchen is that the double tiered kitchen island has a 2nd countertop which gives it more height than the full kitchen island. This type of kitchen island is mainly used for food preparation area or as a wet bar. A lot of People Island install bar stools with a double-tiered kitchen island to make the higher countertop for dining purposes.

  • Portable Islands

The portable kitchen island is usually smaller in size than permanent kitchen island but they are equally important as compared to the fixed kitchen island. Further three types of portable islands are described below:

  • Rolling Kitchen Island

Rolling Kitchen Island is ready-made obtainable in various stores. Or you can choose various items according to your size and the stores will assemble it for you in no time. As the name suggests, you can roll it anywhere because it has wheels and also available in different materials like metal, wood, etc.

This is often used as a small storage space or some people use it for serving or food preparing purposes. Also, some people use it as a rolling bar to carry drinks. The most used rolling kitchen island is butcher block type.

  • Small kitchen Island

The small kitchen island has no wheels but it can be moved from one place to another easily because it is small in size and also it is not attached to the floor. They are also ready-made available in the market or you can buy a customized one by choosing different items which are assembled in no time. You can also add a counter top on it.

Some of the small kitchen islands come with a flap that folds down so they can also be used to extend the workspace. But these flaps cannot support the heavy weight so it will be better to not put any kind of weight or apply pressure to them.

  • Table Island

Table Island is the basic type of Kitchen Island. It just consists of a simple table that is placed in the kitchen. It can be of any size and shape. So any table can be used to serve its purpose.
