Exotic Color Cabinets: Are They Worth It?

The average kitchen sticks to a specific and safe color theme: white, perhaps some blue, or other colors that you are likely to find in a traditional kitchen. However, you rarely see people going for gold or exotic colors – only a few dare to take this plunge.

That being said, there are some benefits to stepping out of the box and choosing something different. In this article, we will discuss exotic colors and whether they are a good choice for you or not.

What Are Exotic Colors?

Exotic colors are the kinds of shades that we would normally describe as “bold.” When many people hear the phrase “exotic colors”, they think about black – which indeed, can be described as exotic. However, that is not the only exotic option you can go for.

Exotic options trigger the “wow” feeling in you. This can be black, but it can also be a deep purple, sunny yellow, forest green, hot pink, bright red, and many more. They can be color alternatives and mixes that no one ever heard of but are very intriguing to the eye.

Why People Go for Exotic Colors

There are various reasons why people are steering away from neutral colors in favor of bold, exotic shades. The main reason is that these hues add more personality to the room while creating a specific theme.

For example, if you use red and black in the color theme, you can obtain that rich, mysterious home vibe that a bachelor or rich person may have. It’s reminiscent of gothic culture or Chinese design, making it the perfect choice for those who wish to have a themed kitchen.

Brown, orange, reds, yellows, and metallic gold also remind people of Egyptian designs, especially when you mix them with dark leather kitchen furniture and heavy drapes.

Interior designers also encourage bolder, exotic colors nowadays, mainly because they can be used to give a statement. Moreover, they leave more space for creativity, leading to an opulent atmosphere that seems timeless and elegant.

“I’m not afraid of color. I like bold statements with color. I like rich hues. I don’t tend to work a lot with muted or tertiary colors. I like crisp white, crisp black; I like crisp vibrant color as an overall statement,” says interior designer Patrick Mele. Working with exotic colors, whether on kitchen cabinets or other types of furniture, helps Mele bring more personality into a home.

When someone enters your kitchen, they will no longer feel like the place is bland and lacking the “oomph.” Instead, they will be intrigued and no longer want to leave for the living room. If you like entertaining people and want to make use of your kitchen as a sitting area, then exotic cabinet colors should be your go-to.

Where Exotic Colors May Be Slightly Inconvenient

Bold kitchen cabinet colors can be a great choice for daring people that like a splash of color. However, depending on the case, they can also be inconvenient.

For example, if you are not planning to keep the house, bold and exotic colors can make it more difficult to find a buyer. This is because people are looking to see themselves in a house. By painting your kitchen cabinets in an exotic color, it may feel like you are pushing your personality onto them.

“Choosing a color theme won’t necessarily make or break a sale, but a bold striking color - for example, black or a bright red or yellow - can be very off-putting and even make the room feel much smaller than it actually is,” says home staging expert Elaine Penhaul.

Trends also fade over time, and an exotic color that is very popular this year may not be as popular in two years. Since you will likely hang onto those cabinets for many years, an exotic color choice may be risky.
