MDF and HDF Information

In some cabinet lines we use Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) or High Density Fiberboard (HDF). It is done to avoid or minimize wood expansion. Solid wood expands over the time, it results in cracks in door joints. In order to avoid the impacts of solid wood expansion, we use MDF and HDF for door and drawer center panels of certain cabinet styles. In some cases, cabinet doors and drawer fronts are entirely made of MDF or HDF. Using MDF and HDF is more common on painted finishes.

These materials are not used as a low cost replacement of solid wood. The structural cabinet parts (side panels, top and bottom panels, face frame, drawer box etc) are still made of real plywood and solid wood.

See specifications for each cabinet line to learn more about materials used. If you have any questions about cabinet construction and materials feel free to call or email us.
